Network Design
The Nebraska Statewide Telehealth Network utilizes a spoke and hub design with all hubs connected to a backbone that runs the length of the state. Please see the map provided on this website. Members include hospitals, public health departments, state and regional bioterrorism labs, the Nebraska State Capitol and the Nebraska State Office Building.
This is a private network in which voice over IP and internet are not allowed to ensure the appropriate use of bandwith and maintain the appropriate security necessary to carry confidential information.
At this time, most spoke sites (also known as endpoints) rely on their hub sites to provide connectivity to others within the Network. The Network plan provides opportunity for point-to-point connections as well as multi-point broadcasts.
Equipment
Equipment specifications were set prior to sites joining the Network to ensure security.
The network has employed Cisco 2811 Routers, Checkpoint VPN-1 Edge Firewalls and Polycam cameras as the standard equipment for all endpoint hospitals. The hub sites are utilizing Cisco 7206 Routers and server based Checkpoint firewalls. For video sessions, Polycom cameras provide encryption themselves.
The Telehealth Security Team continually researches security, including how encryption should be employed across the Network.
