Video Medical Interpreting (VMI)

What is Video Medical Interpreting?

Video Medical Interpreting (VMI) is the use of video conferencing connections to provide the services of an interpreter to aid in the communications between a Limited English Proficient (LEP) patient and a healthcare provider.

Is Video Medical Interpreting (VMI) as good as using a live interpreter?

Yes; in many ways it can be better because the physical presence of a third party in the room is removed but the ability to communicate is still available.

How does the system work?

Using video conferencing is as easy as using a TV remote. You merely turn on the monitor and use the menu button on the remote control to dial the location of the medical interpreter. When the call is over all you have to do is hang-up.

What equipment will the hospital need?

There are three pieces of equipment:

  • a codec camera
  • a monitor
  • a microphone

How will this work on my present computer network?

If you qualify for Universal Service funding your network connection will be provided as part of statewide network which insures a secure connection. CN-AHEC has a technical specialist that can help with internal wiring needs.

What is the cost of using VMI?

The goal of the Hablamos Juntos Project is to improve communication between Spanish LEP patients and providers. With the help of our partners, CN-AHEC hopes to be able to provide interpreter services and translation services at an affordable cost to all rural healthcare providers . In fact, our present pricing structure makes this service more economical than many language line services.
